Brookfield Compressor Station Permit Process Reopened
Connecticut environmental officials have reopened the permit process for the proposed Brookfield compressor station expansion after the company requested a higher carbon monoxide limit. The move gives residents another chance to comment or seek a hearing. Written comments will be accepted through August 24.

Monday’s storms knocked out power to nearly three thousand Connecticut customers before crews reduced the number to about 500 by late evening. Heavy rain also prompted flash flood warnings in western and northern parts of the state.

A Sunday morning fire destroyed JJ Stacks restaurant at 71 South Main Street in Newtown. No injuries were reported. Firefighters contained the blaze to the restaurant, while nearby businesses suffered mostly smoke and ceiling damage. The owner says the restaurant will be rebuilt.

Violent crime in Danbury fell about 50 percent during the first half of 2026 compared with the same period last year. Overall reported crime dropped 25 percent, from more than 15 hundred offenses to just over 11 hundred. Aggravated assaults, shoplifting and vehicle break-ins also declined sharply.

Connecticut has launched Laptop ConneCT, a seven million dollar program providing Dell laptops through participating public libraries. Eligible residents must be at least 18, hold a valid library card and participate in programs such as SNAP, Medicare, HUSKY Health or energy assistance.

Early voting is underway across Connecticut ahead of the August 11 state primary. Registered party members can vote through Sunday at designated locations in their municipality. Hours vary by day. Election Day voting will run from 6 a.m. until 8 p.m. at regular polling places.
