Federal Officials Criticize Danbury Police Hiring Change
The Department of Homeland Security is criticizing Danbury’s decision to let some people which the department refers to as “criminal illegal aliens” apply for police jobs. The City Council approved the change 18 to 2. City Officials claim all applicants must meet the same hiring standards.

A United Way report finds 570,000 Connecticut households could not comfortably afford basic necessities in 2024. That includes families above the federal poverty line but unable to easily cover housing, food, transportation and child care. The total is down slightly from 2023 but remains 14 percent higher than in 2019.

FirstLight will lower water levels at three Connecticut lakes for annual maintenance. The Lake Zoar drawdown begins October 17, followed by Lake Lillinonah on October 26. A deep drawdown of Candlewood Lake, including Squantz Pond, begins November 1. Waterfront property owners should remove docks, boat lifts and other structures.

Connecticut has issued cease-and-desist orders to nine companies accused of offering illegal sports wagers, including Coinbase, Robinhood and Crypto.com. The state also issued nearly 30 subpoenas to businesses and media organizations believed to have relevant information. Officials say only licensed sportsbooks may legally offer sports betting in Connecticut.

A two-day job fair will be held September 25 and 26 for the new Danbury ShopRite. About 200 full- and part-time workers will be hired. Interviews will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 72 Newtown Road. The store is expected to open in November.

Danbury police are investigating a suspected road rage altercation that left a man with an arm injury Thursday near Newtown Road and Old Newtown Road. The victim is hospitalized in stable condition.
