The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection is temporarily allowing municipalities and other government agencies to dispose of snow in certain waterways as the state deals with severe blizzard conditions. The move is aimed at giving towns flexibility after land-based snow disposal sites are exhausted and helps keep roads open for police, fire, and emergency medical crews. The agency says the step also reduces the risk of flooding caused by blocked drainage systems. Before using waterways, towns must notify the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection through an online survey or by email. If advance notice is not possible, officials are instructed to contact DEEP as soon as disposal begins. The allowance remains in effect until further notice.
