Bar Proposal Meets Opposition Over Building Conditions

Some broken windows have caused a delay in the issuance of a liquor permit for a proposed bar at the historic Meeker’s Hardware store on White Street in Danbury. The owner of Billy Beans restaurant… which is next door to the former hardware building… wants to turn the first floor into a 92-seat bar. The problem is… according to the zoning commission… that most of the rest of the old building will remain vacant, and broken windows are letting the weather… and animals such as birds and bats… get into the parts of the building directly above the planned bar. But the owner says there are plans to renovate the exterior and the second and third floors of the building as soon as some money is generated through bar income.
