New Life Possible For Old Hospital

The Fairfield Hills campus in Newtown, once home to Connecticut’s last psychiatric hospital, has been added to the National Register of Historic Places. This designation opens the door for redevelopment, including plans for 169 apartments in two vacant hospital buildings. While some Newtown leaders see potential for transforming more of the 155-acre site, which includes 28 historic buildings, into a blend of housing and commercial spaces, there is mixed public reaction, with some opposing residential development. Developers will now seek federal tax credits to support the project, which may take up to a year.
