A proposal here in Connecticut would… if it passes into law… prohibit marriage for those under the age of 18. It comes about after lawmakers were briefed about the dangers of child abuse, domestic violence, arranged marriages and the high rate of divorce among people who were married at young ages. The current state law that has been in effect since back in 2017, allows teens between 16 and 18 to get married if their plans are approved by a Probate Court judge. Three states neighboring Connecticut, as well as New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Minnesota, have already ended marriage rights for those under 18.
