Getting Tough On Fire Starters

Connecticut lawmakers are pushing for tougher penalties and better wildfire preparedness after a spike in brush fires last fall. A proposed bill would increase fines for illegal burning to as much as $100,000, require wildfire training for emergency crews, and give the governor clearer authority to ban open burns. The move follows a devastating fire season, including one massive fire which took National Guard helicopters to contain and left one firefighter dead.
