A body was recovered from the Who-za-tonic River near Stevenson Dam in Monroe on Monday afternoon. Crews were called around 3:15pm to a report of someone in distress. The body was located at the base of the dam and pulled from the water by dive teams. The identity of the victim has not been released. That comes the same day a new report shows at least 48 accidental drownings have occurred in Connecticut since 2021. The data from the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office follows a CDC report of a national rise in accidental drownings. A 5-year-old died just last week following a water rescue at Indian Well State Park. 11 of the victims over the last four years have been 18 or younger. And one drowning death has occurred at a state park in Connecticut each of the last five years.
