Connecticut Bans First Cousin Marriages Starting Oct. 1

Connecticut’s new law banning marriage between first cousins takes effect October 1. Governor Ned Lamont signed the measure, which prohibits clerks from issuing marriage licenses to first cousins. State Representative Devin Carney, who introduced the bill, noted more than 30 states already have similar bans. Lawmakers say the change closes a gap in Connecticut law and follows concerns about increased health risks tied to such unions.
