A major housing project is being proposed in Newtown along Mount Pleasant Road. Easton developer Stephen Shapiro wants to build 300 apartments, including 90 set aside as affordable units. The plan covers 12 acres and would include three five-story buildings, a gym, pool, clubhouse, and nearly 900 parking spaces. Because 30 percent of the units are deemed “affordable”, the proposal has special protections under Connecticut law. A public hearing could be held as soon as October 16.
