State Orders Oversight After Nonprofit Misuses Energy Aid Funds

Connecticut officials have ordered independent financial oversight and a full audit of New Opportunities Inc. after the nonprofit admitted misusing federal home heating assistance funds. The Waterbury-based agency diverted money meant for low-income energy assistance to cover operating expenses, the second such incident in less than a decade. The state is also requiring the removal of any executives tied to the misuse and is now sending energy assistance payments directly to utility companies. Officials warn funding could be suspended if corrective actions are not enforced.
