A state inspector general report says two inmates at Garner Correctional Institution died after being given excessive doses of methadone by a state contractor. 32 year old Tyler Cole and 30 year old Ronald Johnson were found unresponsive two days apart in July 2024. Investigators say initial methadone doses were too high, increased too quickly, and combined with other medications that suppressed breathing. The deaths were ruled accidental, not criminal. The Department of Correction says it is reviewing its medication assisted treatment policies.
