A highly invasive aquatic plant known as Hydrilla has been identified in lakes near Lake Waramaug, raising concerns about its spread. The plant forms dense mats that crowd out native species, disrupt boating and swimming, and reduce oxygen levels in the water. Officials are planning a boat decontamination station to prevent Hydrilla from reaching Lake Waramaug, with equipment funded by donations and staffing costs shared by the towns. An informational meeting is set for March 5 at 6 p.m. at Washington Town Hall and will also be available on Zoom.
