Major Cuts to Snap, Medicaid Coming As New Federal Law Shifts Costs to States

Connecticut is bracing for major changes to SNAP and Medicaid after a new federal law shifts more financial responsibility to states. Under the measure, Connecticut will be forced to cover 75% of SNAP costs beginning in 2026 — up from the current 50%. That change alone is expected to cost the state $40 million annually. Medicaid recipients will face new work requirements, shorter renewal periods, and limits on retroactive coverage.
