New Fairfield Headed for Big Tax Increase

New Fairfield voters have passed town and school budgets, avoiding a drawn-out budget process seen in previous years. The $14.8 million town plan and $59.15 million school budget each passed by narrow margins. Officials also set the new mill rate at 26.33, which translates to a roughly 7.5% average tax hike. Some homeowners could see double-digit jumps. While some called the increase steep, they also blamed years of poor budgeting and rising debt from new schools. Overall voter turnout was just under 2,000.
