Pair of Recreation Areas Along Housatonic River Shutdown After Recent Drownings

Two recreation areas along the Housatonic (hoos-uh-TON-ic) River in New Milford have been shut down by the town and FirstLight Power, after another drowning over the weekend. A New York 43-year-old died after going into the water to retrieve a ball during a family picnic. His was the third death in the last five years in that section of the river, and there have been nearly 50 accidental drownings statewide during the same period. Dike Point Park and Fisherman’s Lot have been closed while new safety plans are developed. Officials note that swimming is not allowed at any recreation area owned by FirstLight Power.
